Back in September, I had the pleasure of experiencing a rare Toph One adventure. If you are not familiar with Bay Area legends, Toph One–– DJ/writer/street artist/club innovator/AIDS Lifecycle champion/Mayor of Fun––is one of the best people I know. Unfortunately he was just victim to a hit and run on his bike where he ended up in ICU. More here. After surgery on his pelvis and more, he is healing slowly but surely. There is a benefit party for him in San Francisco tonight. Wish I could go but I’m 3,000 miles away. I wanted to post a link to his donation site. Because even if you don’t know Toph, we all know someone who stayed with their dreams as an artist or musician and may not have the kind of corporate health benefits that others do. Anything you can donate is appreciated. I’ve never met a soul who didn’t love this guy––hence the FB group, Support Toph One has nearly 800 members posting good thoughts for him daily since he’s been hospitalized.
Back in 1998-2005 when I lived in SF, Toph adventures were way more common, but now that I’m in NYC, seeing Toph (who does not fly) is about as easy as getting a seat at Zeitgeist on a sunny afternoon. Pretty rare and special. So one day in September after another “no BART past midnight” fiasco (really guys, still?) Toph was nice enough to take my friend and I into his home. The next day we drank PBRs on the lawn, exchanged jokes with his neighbor until an unexpected, magic (free) limo showed up and brought us to the music festival for which we were in town. Just a weird Toph One miracle I suppose. The pictures here are of Toph’s house which I’d been to many times––yet only noticed the real beauty in after being away for so long. I think his home really captures his spirit :) Enjoy the photos, enjoy the benefit tonight and please donate if you can. Thanks! -Jessica
